DescriptionSesame is perhaps the oldest oilseed crop known to man. It is available in a plethora of colors (though off-white is the most common) that include black, brown, grey, maroon, brown and gold. Sesame seeds have nearly 50% oil making it one of the richest oil bearing seeds in the world. Sesame or Gingily oil has a high does of natural antioxidants which gives it a very long shelf life compared to other oils. Thus, Sesame oil a good preservative and used as such for extending the shelf life of herbs, leaves, condiments and pickles.It is a common cooking oil in South India (and to soften "gunpowder" or chutney powder to accompany idli and dosa) .

Kitchen PharmacySesame oil is a rich source of Vitamin E ( known to be an excellent antioxidant) and hence helps in reducing blood pressure levels . In South India it is used for hair care and skin care as well.
