A Pharmacy in your Kitchen

 Meera Vasudevan

Most people have their own repertoire of first aid that doesn't always come out of the medicine cabinet. These simple home remedies can address a range of symptoms and everyone has their own favorite ‘go to’ solutions.

Ashok and I use these remedies in our home too. And because they all seem to originate in the kitchen, we think of it as our Kitchen Pharmacy. Isn’t it somehow fitting that the same kitchen that feeds and nourishes us also provides a balm for our aches and pains? No wonder Ayurveda, the ancient Indian school of medicine posits: “You are what you eat”.

Of course, we all need to be guided by plain old common sense and so you should know when to use these remedies and when to just go to the doctor’s office. These are simple first aid remedies for minor aches and pains and cannot replace your local ER or doctor.

  1. Minor burns or scalds
  2. Indigestion
  3. Acidity and acid reflux
  4. Reduce fever/dissolve chest congestion
  5. Sore throat/ Cough
  6. Pimples
  7. Diarrhea
  8. Dry Cough
  9. Itchy skin Rash

  1. Don't worry about stains, it goes away with light falling on it.....make sure to wear clean cotton clothes on after this ritual!
